Forging a New Corporate Discipline

RivalScape Intelligence Consultants was founded in early 2004 by Paul Houston, a leading management consultant with complimentary skills in competitive intelligence (CI) human capital management and executive search.

Houston has an extensive background in CI, beginning with five years as a Naval Intelligence Officer during the Cold War. He also has wide-ranging experience in executive search in the field of CI where he focuses on competitive research and the development and utilization of comprehensive HR networks.

Houston has integrated these disciplines ito create a groundbreading consultancy and a vital new business tool: Workforce Competitive Intelligence TM (WCI). His demonstrated track record and uncommon skill set make Houston uniquely qualified to pioneer the theory and practice of WCI.

A frequent author and speaker on competitive intelligence, Paul Houston is well-known in the CI field. He has been published in Family Business, Bottomline Business, Direct Marketing Magazine, Pipeline Digest, Oil & Gas Investor, CI Magazine, the scip.online newsletter and The Fordyce Letter. For the past five years Houston has been the leading executive search consultant in the CI industry. He also conducts an annual survey of CI leaders for the Conference Board Council on Competitive Analysis.

Houston's intelligence career began as a Naval Intelligence Officer during the Cold War, when he learned to speak fluent Russian. (Though it might be more accurate to say his CI career started much earlier — as an 11-year-old Little Leaguer!)

During the 1980s Houston was President of ManagersEdge Corporation, a producer of practical audio taped business literature for senior executives. He was the host of the audio series "What Every CEO Should Know" and the creator of a successful series of autobiographies by great business leaders.

As a management and executive search consultant, Houston has worked with clients in a wide range of industries from biotech to publishing to food packaging. He has conducted business globally in Japan, Russia and Kazakhstan, and has gained professional expertise in general management, corporate intelligence, finance, strategic planning, marketing and market research. He has also learned the HR-related disciplines of job analysis and design, team facilitation, organizational development, performance management and corporate culture analysis.

Houston has a BS in History from the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis. He earned an MBA in Corporate Finance from the Daniels School of Business at the University of Denver, and has completed the American Management Association's "Management Course for Presidents."
